At a meeting at The Royal Society of Medicine on Monday a new therapy known as Orthokine was described by orthopaedic surgeon, Prof Wehling. Orthokine takes advantage of the body’s own natural healing mechanism. The technique could improve the quality of life for some of the 6 million people living with osteoarthritis in the UK.

The new treatment is a biotechnology-based method in which proteins that inhibit inflammation and cartilage destruction are obtained from the patient’s own (autologous) blood and injected back into the affected joint.

According to Prof Wehling, a recent independent study has demonstrated that autologous conditioned serum (orthokine) is an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis. “Orthokine considerably improves clinical signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and that the effects are significantly superior to those of conventional treatments currently available to patients in the UK”.

It was said that the effect on patients’ quality of life including a reduction in pain and increased function and mobility are felt for up to two years.  Follow up research has even shown a positive effect in 40% of patients after four years.

Please keep me informed about this treatment . My back problems have become debilitating .Although I swim 3 times a week and do lots of specific exercises it seems to be getting worse . Until 16 months ago I was very fit playing league tennis matches twice a week in the summer and other tournaments in the winter.

I am 47 years old and have severe osteo arthritis in both knees. I would like to try Orthokine instead of Knee replacements. Have read about treatment available in Germany but costs between 5 and 10 thousand pounds. Do we know how UK trials are going?

  6. Clare says:

As a vet, we have been using this technology in horses and seen some excellent results, I would be very keen to try it for my OA in my knee as soon as it is available.

  7. Maxine says:

I would like further information about this as my mum has osteoarthritis in her neck and spine, the doctors now say there is no more they can do for her and she is in so much pain as the pain killers have stopped working, she is sinking daily into a deep depression and is loosing the will to carry on. She has always been very independant and it is heartbreaking to watch.
